Zero Click Search Is Not a Theory Anymore

Two independent studies now measure the same effect from different angles. Pew Research found people click a traditional search result about half as often when an AI summary appears above it. SparkToro's clickstream data separately found most Google searches now end without any click at all. Neither study measures total search volume, only what happens to the click.

Two teams, two methods, the same shape

It is rare for two independent research efforts to converge this cleanly, using different data sources and different methods, and land on the same conclusion. That is what happened here, which is why we think this is worth taking seriously rather than treating as another vendor talking point.

Pew Research Center, a non-commercial research organization with no product to sell, tracked real browsing sessions. SparkToro, working from a different angle entirely, analysed clickstream panel data across the broader search population. Neither is guessing. Both point the same direction.

What Pew actually found

Pew's study observed 900 US adults across 68,879 unique Google searches in March 2025, comparing what happened when a search result page included an AI-generated summary against pages that did not.

The gap was substantial. Users clicked through to a traditional search result in 8 percent of visits where a summary appeared, against 15 percent where it did not, roughly half the rate. They clicked a link embedded inside the summary itself in just 1 percent of visits. And the session was more likely to end entirely right there: 26 percent of visits with a summary present saw no further search activity, against 16 percent without one.

This is measured behaviour, not a stated preference from a survey. People were not asked whether they thought they would click less. They were observed clicking less.

What SparkToro found, separately

SparkToro's method is different: a clickstream panel tracking real user sessions across a broader population, not tied specifically to whether an AI summary appeared. Its finding, published in June 2026, is that 68.01 percent of all Google searches in January through April 2026 ended without any click at all, up from 60.45 percent as recently as 2024.

That is a faster shift than the trend had been running for most of the past decade, which is part of why SparkToro described it as the fastest acceleration of the pattern it has tracked. It is a broader number than Pew's, since it covers all searches rather than isolating the AI-summary effect specifically, but it is consistent with the same underlying shift: fewer searches are ending in a click on anything.

What neither study says

We want to be precise about the limits here, because it is easy to overreach from a real finding into an unsupported one.

Neither study measures how many searches are happening in total. A claim that search volume itself is rising or falling year over year would need a different kind of data, and we could not find a primary source for that specific figure that we would be willing to publish. What both studies measure is narrower and more specific: given that a search happened, how often did it end in a click. That number is falling. Whether the number of searches happening in the first place is also changing is a genuinely separate question this data does not answer.

Why this matters more than a ranking position

The practical consequence is straightforward once you sit with it. A page can hold the top organic position for its target query and still see traffic decline, because the reader's question got answered in the summary above the results and they never scrolled down to click anything.

That reframes the actual goal. Ranking well is still necessary, since summaries draw heavily on what ranks, but it stops being sufficient on its own. The thing worth optimizing for now includes whether your product gets named inside the summary itself, which is a different, newer discipline built on a different set of signals than classic on-page SEO. Two independent datasets now agree on why that shift is real rather than speculative.

Questions this raises

Does this mean total search traffic is falling?
That is a different question from the one either study answers, and it is worth being precise about it. Both measure the click, not the total number of searches performed. A claim that overall search volume is rising or falling has no reliable primary source we could find, so we are not making one. What we can say with confidence is that a smaller share of searches end in a click than before.
How was the Pew figure actually measured?
Pew tracked real browsing behaviour rather than surveying opinions, which is a meaningfully stronger method. It observed 900 US adults across 68,879 unique Google searches conducted in March 2025, then compared click rates on searches that showed an AI summary against ones that did not. Stop treating a ranking position as the finish line. If a meaningful share of the people who would have clicked your result now read a summary instead, the summary itself becomes something worth being named inside, which is what generative engine optimization is actually about. Ranking well and never being mentioned in the answer is now a real and increasingly common outcome.
