The weekly plan behind your first 1000 users

Set a user target, a deadline, and what you expect each unit of activity to return, and this converts the goal into weekly posts, outreach messages, and community answers. It then checks that workload against your team size and tells you plainly when the plan does not fit.

Before you start

  • Write down today's yield assumptions so you can compare them against reality in two weeks.
  • Instrument the signup form so you know which channel each user came from, or none of this can be corrected later.
  • Pick the channel you will drop first if capacity runs short, and decide it now rather than in week five.
  • Check each platform's rules on automation and promotion before you scale any of this activity.

This plan needs about 203% of what 2 people can sustain in a week. Something has to give: extend the deadline, cut the target, or drop a channel and go deeper on one. Spreading a plan this heavy across three channels usually produces three half-worked channels and no users.

How this works

What the numbers mean.

  • 01The gap between your target and today's users is divided by the weeks available, which gives the users you need each week. Everything else is that number split across channels and divided by the yield you set.
  • 02Channel mix presets set the share of the target each channel carries. They are allocation choices, not predictions about which channel works best for you.
  • 03Workload is checked against a weekly ceiling per person: five substantial posts, two hundred and fifty outreach messages, or twenty five community answers. These are our operating estimates of sustainable output, not measured figures, and you should replace them with your own once you have run a few weeks.

Assumptions and limits

  • The default yields are starting points, not benchmarks. We have not measured them across companies and you should not treat them as data. Replace them with your own numbers after two weeks.
  • Users per unit of activity is highly variable and usually falls as you scale. The first fifty outreach messages go to the warmest names on your list, and the next five hundred do not.
  • Automated posting and outreach is governed by each platform's own rules, and several of them restrict it in ways that matter. Check the rules for any channel before scaling activity on it.
  • This plans activity. It says nothing about whether the product is ready for a thousand people, which is the more common reason this target is missed.

Questions about this tool

Why does this not include benchmark conversion rates?
Because credible ones do not exist for this. Users per post varies by orders of magnitude between an established founder audience and a cold account, and any single figure published as a benchmark is either from one company or invented. The defaults here are labelled as starting points, and the only number worth planning against is the one you measure yourself in week two.
How many channels should I actually run?
Fewer than the mix suggests, at least at first. Three channels at a third of the effort each usually produces three channels that do not work, because most of them only start returning once you understand the audience well enough to be useful in them. Run one properly, prove the yield, then add a second.
Is 1000 users the right target?
It is a useful round number rather than a meaningful threshold, and the right target depends entirely on what you sell. A thousand free signups and a thousand paying customers are different problems by two orders of magnitude. Set the target at whatever number tells you the thing you need to know next.
What should I do when the plan does not fit my team?
Change the deadline before you change the quality of the work, because a plan run at half attention on every channel is the one reliable way to learn nothing. Cutting to a single channel and extending by four weeks is almost always better than running three channels badly for twelve.
