Where your post gets cut off

Paste a post once and see it counted against the limits for X, LinkedIn, Reddit titles and bodies, Hacker News titles, Bluesky, Instagram captions, and YouTube descriptions. It also shows where each platform cuts the text in the feed, which matters far more than the limit itself.

What shows before the LinkedIn see more link

We spent six weeks watching founders try to distribute their own content, and the pattern was always the same: they published, then stopped. Here is what the ones who kept going did differently, and none of it ...

Over the limit

  • Hacker News title: over by 158 characters. Hard limit enforced by the submit form.

Where each platform truncates

  • X post: Shown in full at this length. Premium accounts can post longer, and longer posts collapse behind a Show more link.
  • LinkedIn post: Roughly 200 to 210 characters before the see more link on desktop. Mobile differs.
  • Reddit title: Shown in full in most views.
  • Reddit self-post body: Collapsed in card view, so the opening lines do the work.
  • Hacker News title: Hard limit enforced by the submit form.
  • Bluesky post: Counted in graphemes, so emoji and accented characters can differ from a plain character count.
  • Instagram caption: About 125 characters before the more link in feed.
  • YouTube description: Roughly the first 150 characters sit above the fold and feed the search snippet.

Trim about 158 characters to clear every platform shown, or write a separate version for the tightest one. Rewriting per platform beats truncating for all of them.

Limits and truncation points are maintained by hand here and change without notice. The truncation figures in particular are approximate, they differ between desktop and mobile, and this page does not query any platform. Check the composer before anything important goes out.

How this works

What the numbers mean.

  • 01The text is counted once, optionally trimmed of leading and trailing whitespace, then compared against each platform limit with your reserved characters added on top. Reserving characters is how you account for a link or sign-off you have not written yet.
  • 02The in-feed cut column is separate from the limit, because the two answer different questions. The limit tells you whether the post can be published. The cut tells you how much of it will actually be read.
  • 03The LinkedIn preview shows the first 210 characters, which is roughly what appears before the see more link on desktop. If the point of the post is not in that preview, the post is not doing its job.

Assumptions and limits

  • Limits are stored in this page and maintained by hand. Nothing here queries a platform, so treat the numbers as a working reference rather than a live check.
  • Truncation points are approximate and vary between desktop, mobile, and app versions. They are included because they matter more than the limits, not because they are precise.
  • Character counting differs between platforms. Bluesky counts graphemes, some platforms count certain emoji as more than one character, and links are frequently counted at a fixed length.

Questions about this tool

Why does the composer show a different count?
Usually links or emoji. Several platforms substitute links with a wrapper of fixed length, so a very long URL and a very short one cost the same, and some count emoji as two characters or more. This page counts plain characters, so treat it as a drafting guide and confirm in the composer.
Should I write one post for every platform?
No, and this tool is not an argument for it. Counting one text against every limit is useful for knowing what has to be rewritten, not for justifying a copy and paste. The same text posted identically everywhere reads as syndicated, and on some platforms duplicate cross-posting is against the rules outright.
Why does the truncation point matter more than the limit?
Because almost nobody expands a post. If the argument only appears after the see more link, the post is judged on the setup rather than the point. Writing the conclusion first and the context second is the single highest-return edit for feed-based platforms.
What about hashtags and mentions?
They count as ordinary characters here, which is right for the limit and slightly wrong for the cut, since a hashtag block at the end of a caption is rarely what gets truncated. Use the reserve field to hold space for a block you plan to add.
